Abstract

Behavioral and learning adjustment problems are common among school students and can negatively influence their academic achievement, classroom behavior and social relationships. These challenges often include inattentiveness, disruptive behaviour, low motivation, anxiety, poor peer interaction and difficulty coping with academic demands. Based on a review of secondary qualitative sources such as published articles, books and policy reports, research consistently shows that students’ emotional well-being plays a vital role in their ability to adjust to school and remain engaged in learning activities.

Students who feel emotionally supported, respected and safe within the school environment are more likely to develop positive attitudes toward learning. Supportive teacher–student relationships, inclusive classroom practices, social-emotional learning programs and strong family involvement contribute significantly to reducing behavioral difficulties. Academic engagement reflected in students’ active participation, interest, effort and commitment to schoolwork also helps prevent adjustment problems and promotes better learning outcomes.

The findings from secondary literature suggest that schools should adopt a holistic approach that integrates emotional support systems with strategies to increase academic engagement. Strengthening emotional well-being alongside effective teaching practices can create a positive learning environment that supports students’ overall development and long-term success.
