This systematic review explores the impact of social anxiety on academic performance and social behaviour among students across various educational contexts. Drawing from 32 empirical studies published between 2012 and 2023, the review identifies consistent patterns indicating that social anxiety adversely affects students’ academic engagement, classroom participation, and social relationships. Key symptoms such as fear of negative evaluation, avoidance behaviours, and emotional dysregulation were found to hinder students’ ability to perform academically and develop peer connections. The review also highlights psychological factors such as shame, embarrassment, and fear of judgment that maintain and exacerbate social anxiety. Gender differences, with female students showing higher sensitivity to social evaluation, were also noted. The findings underscore the importance of early intervention and supportive academic environments that promote social competence, emotional regulation, and self-confidence to mitigate the effects of social anxiety on student well-being and academic success.
