Abstract

Jacobson’s progressive muscle relaxation is an evidence-based technique developed in the 1920s that reduces anxiety by systematically tensing and relaxing muscle groups. This identifies and releases physical tension associated with stress and anxiety. JPMR works by lowering sympathetic nervous system activity and increasing parasympathetic relaxation responses. Research shows that JPMR effectively reduces subjective feelings of anxiety, physiological markers of stress like blood pressure, and symptoms across various anxiety disorders. It has been applied in clinical settings for conditions like hypertension, insomnia, and test anxiety, as well as for self-care stress management. Variations range from abbreviated practices to mindfulness-integrated JPMR, therapist-guided delivery, and mobile apps. Potential areas needing further research are comparing the effectiveness of different JPMR delivery methods and isolating the specific active components within multi-modal JPMR interventions. JPMR holds promise for managing academic stress in Indian higher education given the strong cultural alignment with mind-body medicine traditions already familiar to Indians. Strategic nationwide implementation could integrate JPMR across digital platforms, workplaces, public health networks, and academic curricula. This would provide accessible stress relief to diverse Indian demographics from urban populations to rural communities. Adapting JPMR programming to the Indian cultural context may help build lasting anxiety- coping skills beginning in schools and colleges. Widespread JPMR adoption leverages India's extensive public health infrastructure, digital networks, and pressing mental health needs. It provides evidence-based yet non-stigmatized self-care aligned with preferences for self- reliance. Potential channels span mass media broadcasts, health worker training, academic infusion, workplace wellness and mental health apps. In summary, JPMR is supported by substantial research demonstrating its ability to induce relaxation and reduce anxiety. This establishes JPMR as a promising solution that can be culturally adapted and systematically implemented at scale in India to address escalating stress burdens and confer lifelong coping benefits beginning in youth. Further research can refine approaches for optimizing JPMR delivery for diverse Indian populations.
