Keywords:
burnout, caregiver burden, caregivers of elderly, quality of lifeAbstract
The study aims to investigate the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and burnout in caregivers of the elderly. It focuses on assessing the relationship between domains of quality of life such as physical, psychological, social relationships and environmental well-being with burnout among caregivers of the elderly. It also investigates the predictors of burnout among caregivers including emotional strain and self-care practices. The study uses the quantitative approach, making use of The World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL- BREF) and Zarit Caregiver Burden Assessment to measure the QoL and burnout, respectively. The study was conducted on a population of 120 people aged between 25-55 years which comprised 62 females (51.7%) and 58 males (48.3%). Participants completed the QoL scale and Zairt Burden Scale to assess the correlation between QoL and burnout among caregivers of the elderly. A correlational study was used to analyze the correlation between QoL and burnout among caregivers of the elderly. Analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between QoL and burnout. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient between the physical domain of QoL and burnout was found to be negative (r= -.417, p< 0.01), between the psychological domain of QoL and burnout was found to be negative (r= -.396, p< 0.01), between social relationship and burnout was found to be negative (r= -.372, p< 0.01) and between environmental well-being and burnout found to be negative (r= -0363, p< 0.01).The findings provide insights into the impact of caregiving on the QoL and burnout levels of caregivers, focusing on the need to provide interventions to the targeted population thus enhancing the overall QoL and well-being in this population.
