EFFECT OF SKIN COLOUR, AND GENDER ON NARCISSISM, SELF-CONCEPT, AND AGGRESSION ORIENTATION AMONG YOUNG ADULT STUDENTS

Abstract

The present study deals with the effect of gender and skin colour on narcissism, self-concept, and aggression orientation among young adult students. For the data collection procedure, 90 male and female (30 belonging to each skin colour level) young adults within the age range of 18-25 years belonging to middle socioeconomic status, with a minimum 10+2 level of school education were approached. The skin colour of the participants has been measured using a skin colour card and classified under three levels: fair, medium and dark. The sample for the study was first screened to rule out any effect of psychopathological causes or conditions using the General Health Questionnaire-28. For the data collection procedure, the respective questionnaires have been used, namely- Narcissistic Personality Inventory-40, Self Concept Inventory and the Aggression Orientation Scale. The statistical analyses were computed using the SPSS version 21. The outcomes of the ANOVA and MANOVA tests show that gender significantly influences some aspects of narcissism, such as exploitativeness and self- sufficiency. Additionally, it has been discovered that exhibitionism is significantly impacted by skin tone. It is also discovered that exhibitionism is significantly impacted by the relationship between gender and skin tone. The results of the ANOVA demonstrated that gender has a substantial impact on some specific domains of self-concept, including the political and physical self. The results of the MANOVA demonstrated that gender has a significant effect on the self-concept dimensions, such as the political and physical self- concept. It further indicates that skin tone significantly influences three types of aggression orientation: verbal, physical, and predisposition tendencies.
