Abstract

The chapter explores the prevalent issue of career anxiety in modern society, defined as persistent feelings of apprehension or fear related to one's job or career path. It examines the complex interplay of factors contributing to career anxiety, including societal pressures, psychological theories, individual traits, and emerging trends in the job market. Drawing from psychological theories like decision-making theory, social comparison theory, and self- efficacy theory, it elucidates the cognitive biases and societal norms shaping career-related anxieties. The chapter further delves into the role of personality traits, upbringing, and societal expectations in moulding career anxieties. It illustrates how a widespread sense of inadequacy, fear of failure, and relentless pursuit of career success are caused by a variety of factors, including neuroticism, perfectionism, parental demands, socioeconomic status, and competitive cultural standards. Practical strategies and interventions for managing and alleviating career anxiety are presented, including mindfulness practices, cognitive- behavioural techniques, building support networks, cultivating a growth mindset, and prioritizing self-care activities. The chapter concludes by examining how developments in the employment market, such as automation, the gig economy, and demographic shifts, may affect career anxiety and offering strategies for career futureproofing, adaptability, and lifelong learning.
