A Study on Social Media Addiction and its Correlates
Abstract
This study investigates the social media addiction and its correlates such as self-esteem, wellbeing, level of anger, problem frequency behavior, general procrastination, and difficulties in emotion regulation (DERS) among adolescents. The data of 100 students was collected which include 50 boys and 50 girls. The data of 16 to 18 years of children i.e. classes 10,11 and 12 was collected through survey and interview method. The tools used in the study were Social Networking Addiction Scale by Shahnawaz and Rehman, Self Esteem Questionnaire by Dubois et al, EPOCH measure of adolescent Well Being by Kern et al, Level of Anger Scale (LAS) by DiGiuseppe, Problem Behaviour Frequency Scale by Dahlberg et al., General Procrastination Scale by Lodha et al and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation (DERS) by Gratz and Roemer. The study concludes that there is significant difference in adolescent boys and girls on physical aggression, non-physical aggression, relational aggression, problem frequency behavior, impulse, clarity and difficulties in emotion regulation. The study also shows that there is significant positive correlation in optimism, anger level, physical aggression, nonphysical aggression, problem frequency behavior and general procrastination with social media addiction among total sample and significant negative correlation in family self esteem and total wellbeing in total sample. The boys show significant and positive correlation to anger level, physical aggression, non-physical aggression, and problem frequency behavior. The girls show significant positive correlation of procrastination with social media addiction and significant negative correlation with family self-esteem, happiness, and total well-being.
