A Study on Belongingness, Social Support and Personality among Young Adults

Abstract

A sense of belonging is a desire for humans to identify with another group of people and be accepted by them. The ability to feel welcomed inside a social group is defined as belonging. Social support is the perception and reality that one feels cared for, that one may get help from others and above all, that one is part of a supportive or helpful social circle. Personality refers to a person’s permanent features and behavior that compose his or her different adjustment to life, including major traits, interests, desires, beliefs, self-concept, skills, and patterns of emotions. Our personalities are believed to be long-lasting, stable, and difficult to change. The research aimed to study the relationship of personality, belongingness and perceived social support among males and female young adults. Standardized tools were used to measure personality, belongingness, and perceived social support among young adults. A total sample of young adults in the age of 18-25 years from which a total 100 responses i.e., 50 male and 50 female responses were collected. The results found out positive correlation between Acceptance Belongingness and Agreeableness and Social support, but a negative correlation with Neuroticism. Though, positive correlation was found in Rejecting Belonging with Extraversion and Perceived Social Support. However, a negative relationship was seen in Rejecting Belongingness and Neuroticism. Moreover, Conscientiousness is positively associated with Social Support. Further, females were higher in conscientiousness than males. Moreover, no gender differences were found on other variables. Good physical and mental health depend on having a sense of belonging.
