Mental Well Being and Self Esteem among Young Adults practicing Yoga and Non practicing Yoga

Abstract

Mental health is essential to physical health and fulfillment holistically. Self-esteem is an individual's sense of self-worth and value, whereas mental well-being includes a wider variety of psychological elements that promote a positive state of mind. Yoga, an ancient practice that incorporates physical postures, breathing exercises and meditation, has been discovered to be an effective method for enhancing mental health. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice that is increasingly recognized as a means of promoting mental health. The current research aimed to study mental well-being and self-esteem among yoga and non-yoga practitioners. A total sample of 150 was collected (75 yoga practitioners and 75 non yoga practitioners). Standardized scales were used to measure Mental Well-Being and Self-Esteem. The result found out significant positive relationship between self-esteem and well-being. The results also found yoga practitioners higher on well-being as compared to non-yoga practitioners. However, no difference in the group was found in self-esteem among the two groups. Promoting mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, and self-reflection as supplementary means of enhancing mental health and self-esteem.
