Parenting Style, Self-Efficacy & Locus of Control among Young Adults

Abstract

The most important relationship of the individual is with his/her parents. Parenting is a style that helps the parents to prepare their children for autonomy. This helps the child to advance their self-esteem and prepare them for life. The personality of the child and the cultural norms of the parents reflect the parenting style the child may receive. It may either be authoritative, authoritarian, or permissive. Self-efficacy is the personal belief of an individual in their ability to complete their task and achieve a goal. Locus of control studies about the perception of the individual about the causes of the main events happening in his/her life. The research aimed to study the perceived parenting styles and its relationship to self-efficacy and locus of control among young adults (18-25 years). Standardized scales of Parenting Style Scale, Self-Efficacy Scale and Locus of Control Scale were used. Standardized tools were used to measure parenting style among young adults. A total sample of 102 young adults was collected. The results found out a positive significant relationship between Authoritative parenting style and Self-Efficacy (r= 0.383, p < .05). There is no significant relationship between all the dimensions of parenting style and locus of control as well as between locus of control and self-efficacy. Parents should enhance their children's self-esteem, which may increase their self-efficacy, as well as their locus of control, by exhibiting positive behavior towards them. Parents should effectively communicate with and unconditionally adore their children.
