Abstract

Empathy is putting oneself in someone else's position and feeling what they are feeling. Having empathy enables us to build those social connections. Empathy is a form of compassion, and it is important because otherwise an individual could care less about what others are going through. It is a fundamental aspect of human social interaction and plays a crucial role in building and maintaining relationships. Self- Esteem refers to an individual‘s evaluation of his/her worth. Self-Esteem is self- assessment; this perception and evaluation can be positive and pleasant or unpleasant. An individual with low self-esteem hides themselves from new challenges and awkward social situation while high self-esteem is generally associated with positive outcomes such as confidence, happiness, and resilience. The research aimed to study the relationship of Self-esteem and Empathy among young adults. Standardized tools were used to measure self-esteem and empathy among young adults. A total sample of 100 (Males 50 and Females 50) in the age of 18-25 years were collected. The results found out that there is a significant positive relation between Self-Esteem and Empathy. The results also found that females are high on empathy as compared to males. To overcome the emerging problem of self-esteem among adults there are various ways. The first step is to identify, and then challenges, your negative beliefs about yourself and then identify the positive in themselves. In general, positive internal dialogue is a big part of improving your self-esteem. In addition, striking up conversations with strangers is a great approach to improve your capacity for empathy. Being truthful with oneself also helps.
