Understanding Rape Myth Acceptance: Investigating Sexism, and Cultural Attitudes Toward Indian Women

Abstract

Rape myth acceptance (RMA) perpetuates victim-blaming attitudes and minimizes the accountability of perpetrators, making it a critical issue in gender studies and social psychology. The study examines the relationship between RMA, Ambivalent Sexism (AS), and Traditional Attitudes Toward Women (TAW) in an Indian context, where cultural norms and gender roles deeply influence perceptions of sexual violence. A sample of 75 participants (49 females, 25 males) aged 18 to 60 completed an online survey measuring their endorsement of RMA, AS, and TAW using the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI), the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (IRMA), and the Traditional Attitudes Toward Indian Women Scale (TAIW). Results revealed significant associations between these constructs, indicating that individuals who accept rape myths are more likely to endorse sexist beliefs and uphold traditional gender norms. The findings highlight how both hostile and benevolent sexism contribute to the normalization of rape myths, reinforcing patriarchal structures that undermine gender equality. By understanding these interconnected biases, this study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions, including educational programs, policy reforms, and cultural shifts, to challenge harmful stereotypes and foster a more just society. Future research should further explore the causal mechanisms underlying these attitudes and examine how socialization influences their development over time.
